Sabres vs Stars October 8
Lost my C$50 on the Stars -1.5 last Saturday because I didn't check which goalie was starting, lesson locked in, so tonight I check the confirmed starters before touching anything on this Sabres-Stars opener Oct 8. On paper Dallas looks like the sharper side, 112 points and a 279-226 goal record against Buffalo's 288-241, but three points apart in the table tells me this is closer to a coin flip than a -1.5 hammer.
My play: small on Stars ML, skip the puck line entirely. The value I actually like is Sabres props. Points and shots on goal, before that brutal stretch hits them: Florida at home Oct 12, then Montréal and Toronto on the road. If Buffalo's top guys are going to pad stats, it's tonight against a Dallas side that might be pacing itself before back-to-backs with Colorado Oct 14 and 15. Staked a unit on the props, ML on top, and if it lands I'm on and forgotten by puck drop tomorrow. 🍺💸
Checking confirmed starters before touching a puck line is the single cheapest discipline there is, Retro, and it costs people nothing until it costs them C$50. My read on Oct 8: Dallas's 279-226 differential screams a structure game, so Stars -1.5 only if the price is short, while Buffalo's 288 goals against a 241-against defence says their props (shots especially) carry value before that Florida-Montréal-Toronto run. Caveat as always. One game in October, tiny sample for any early-season trend. 📊
I keep my own tables 📊

Jacky boy with the "structure game" analysis, love it 😏 A team that lost 20 games in regulation somehow screams -1.5 to you? Buffalo put up 288 goals, more than Dallas managed, and they're 4th in the table on home ice. But sure, hammer the road favourite in an opener where nobody's legs are even going yet.
I'd rather take Sabres props myself, shots and points markets before that Florida-Montréal-Toronto stretch, because once that gauntlet starts everyone will be fading them anyway. Retro checking goalies is cute, one lesson learned and suddenly he's a scholar 🤡 Anyway, I already sized in over on the sportsbook, modestly, because opening nights are coin flips and my record says don't get greedy. Wait for the fanboys to pile in on Dallas though, that's when the price gets juicy on Buffalo.
Enforcer makes a fair point on the 20 regulation losses, but 288 goals against a 241 against tells me Buffalo were trading chances, and Dallas's 226 allowed is the kind of defence that wins puck lines on the road. Three points between them in the table, though — that's a one-goal game on paper. I'd want the confirmed starters too, and even then I'd take Stars -1 over -1.5 before a Buffalo prop.
Sample first, conclusions after.
Interesting that Buffalo scored more yet finished behind Dallas by three points, that right there tells you whose defence pays the -1.5. I'd rather take Stars ML and save the juice. 🔥
Bankroll discipline wins.
288 goals and still third-best offence gets called elite around here while conceding 41 more than Dallas does 😂 Ben's got it right, taking ML and dodging the extra goal is the play if you ask me. Funny how nobody asked which starter shows up under all those "trading chances" lanes either, what's your actual ROI on opener puck lines, enforcer?🤡💸
Show me your ROI first 😏
Dallas only allowed 226 all season, road -1.5 against a Buffalo side leaking 241 feels cheap, honestly. But I'm checking goalies first, learned that the hard way. 💸
Value over a big price 💸
Everyone here suddenly a puck line professor over one goalie check 😂 Dallas gave up 226 all year, that -1.5 ain't cheap, it's a lottery. 💸
Buffalo's offence is my angle - hit their points and shots props instead of paying for a two-goal margin Dallas rarely covers on the road. Would Stars -1.5 even have landed last Saturday if you'd picked a spot? 😭
The line moves — catch it.
Riding Sabres props against a defence that gave up 226? Bold strategy mate, my the book thanks you 😂 Buffalo's got Florida then Toronto looming, good luck there 🤡

Beth's angle makes sense to me, mostly because I've been burned too many times paying full juice on a two-goal margin. Dallas only won 20 in regulationcomfort by more than one all year if their record is anything to go by, 50 wins, 12 of whatever those OT points were. That's a lot of one-goal games for a team everyone's calling a -1.5 machine.
What I'd actually do: split the stake. Half on the Sabres team totals/shots props, half on Dallas ML, and I'm checking starters like Retro said before a cent moves. Buffalo scoring 288 is real, but so is that schedule, Florida Monday, Montréal, then Toronto. Might just sit the whole thing out and put my bankroll into the Oct 12 game where the matchup is cleaner. You only live once, but the bankroll outlives us all 😭💸
Up one week, down the next. Classic.
FaithfulFan63 doing math with "12 of whatever those OT points were" 😂 mate, if you're guessing at the record don't cite it. Beth, remind me of your ROI on these Sabres props? 288 goals sounds nice until Dallas' 226-against shows up and Florida waits three days later. 💸

Riding props before checking who's in the Stars crease is how bankrolls die, so I'm with Retro on the goalie check first. My lean is a small Stars moneyline stake, maybe a half unit, because that 279-226 goal record smells like a team that controls games even when the -1.5 doesn't land - and Buffalo's schedule right after this one (Florida, then Montréal and Toronto on the road) makes me think they're not peeking past Dallas either. I'll pass on the puck line juice and just take the win straight up. 💸
Bankroll discipline wins.
Small Stars moneyline for me, half unit, and I only fire after starters drop. Passing on that -1.5 juice tonight. Bankroll is everything. 💸
