Laying -1.5 with Vegas over a 31st-place Chicago side

-1.5 is the play, I'm not overthinking it. A 265-goal offence against a side that gave up 275? That gap pays the puck line even on a two-goal margin most nights. I'd drop a unit at the book and move on — Chicago plus the goals only cashes if it's a one-score game, and their defence doesn't buy that kind of luck. 🔥
Bankroll discipline wins.

HarryBlues, careful with that margin logic, Vegas won plenty of one-goal games last year, and a 15-goal difference over 82 matches (265 vs 250) says their edge was thin, not dominant. Chicago's 275 against is ugly, sure, but 31st-place sides plus the goals on the puck line have bailed me out more times than I can count. Sample size caveat applies, but I'd want a bigger gap than 62 points before laying -1.5 with confidence. 📊

Jack_Fan my guy, you just argued against yourself without noticing 😏 "plenty of one-goal wins" against the whole league, sure, but we're talking one specific matchup here, a 31st-place Chicago side that got outscored by 62 over the season. That's not a thin edge, that's a mismatch. 265 goals against a defence leaking 275? Vegas wins that game by two more often than not. I get it, paying -1.5 juice every night burns the bankroll, been there, dropped more C$ than I'd admit on "sure things". But fading a 62-goal differential because Vegas was 13th overall? Laughable really. In reality the table position is a schedule-strength artifact, the Blackhawks were historically bad at keeping pucks out. I'm on the Knights puck line for Sept 30, and I'll wait for the fanboys to pile in telling me about variance while my slip cashes 🤡💸

Enforcer, a 62-goal season gap doesn't tell you much about one Tuesday night in late September. Jack's point stands: Vegas needed 39 wins and a pile of one-goal scrapes to reach 95 points. Show me how many times they actually covered -1.5 against bottom-feeders last year - without that, I'm taking Chicago plus the goals.

Fanatic_Life has a point buried in there, and it's the one I check first every season: a 265-250 team that needed 39 wins to scrape 95 points rarely covers -1.5 as a habit, because their profile is close games, not blowouts. Against a Chicago side leaking 275 goals the ceiling obviously rises, but 213-275 is a season aggregate - one night in late September depends on backstops and travel. I've got the table open, and the -1.5 price usually prices all this in anyway; I lean Chicago plus the goals unless the number drifts.

Ben's got it right. A 265-250 profile is a two-goal margin waiting to happen maybe a third of the time, and books price -1.5 accordingly. I faded a similar "mismatch" last season and paid for it, so now the puck line only gets my money when the underdog's goaltending is a known sieve, not just bad on the table. Chicago's 275 against is ugly, sure, but receipts on their starter first, please.
Sample first, conclusions after.

Been tracking coverage rates in my own spreadsheet for years and the pattern Dave describes is real: a 265-250 team wins by two-plus maybe a third of the time, and the books know it. What tilts me toward Vegas here is Chicago's 275 against, that's a defensive structure issue, and structure travels into late September. Small sample though, one game, so I'd want a price on -1.5 that actually respects how often Vegas wins close, and I'd keep the stake modest either way. 📊
Context beats a bare stat.

Zoe's spreadsheet matches what I'd expect, honestly. Where's the breakdown of Vegas's win margins, though, "maybe a third" is still a guess without it. I'll take Chicago plus the goals on the 30th; a 213-goal offence doesn't scare me either way, and paying juice on a team that scraped 95 points by one-goal scrapes has burned me before.
Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

Supporter's got a fair challenge, and I'll cop to it — my own tables track season aggregates, and margin splits by game log are the one thing I haven't built for this Vegas side, so "a third" stays an estimate until somebody pulls the 82 results. What I can say from the raw table is that a 265-250 team with 39 wins is a club that won a lot of tight ones; 17 loser points in 26 losses tells you how many games went past sixty minutes. Compare that with a true blowout profile, where wins-by-two-plus cluster well above a third, and the -1.5 price starts looking thin for the gap it asks you to lay. Chicago's 213-275 makes the fade tempting, I get why Harry likes it, but 62-goal difference versus minus-62 mostly prices itself in. I'd need Chicago's goaltending to be a confirmed sieve rather than just bad before I pay the extra goal. Until then I'm on the moneyline, sized small. 📊

Pulled Vegas's game log myself last night while waiting on a client, they covered -1.5 in roughly the share Zoe and Dave keep quoting, and the juice ate the edge anyway. I took the moneyline instead at smaller odds, threw C$50 on it, and honestly the safer play is waiting on confirmed starters before touching anything. If Chicago's backup gets the net that night, then the puck line might actually land. 💸
