Gonna say the thing nobody here wants to hear: half of you would rather argue about tanking for the fifth year straight than admit the window's already cracking open. The Bell Centre crowd was chanting in APRIL, fellas. April. That building hasn't felt like that since the 2021 run, and you're all still pretending we're three lottery picks away from relevance.
And yeah, I know the trade-the-picks faction is already typing. Flip the first-rounder for a proven centre, Hughes has C$8.5M in cap space just sitting there, etc. Cute theory. Meanwhile Kent Hughes has fleeced pretty much every GM he's traded with so far, and you want him to panic-buy a rental at the deadline because your fantasy roster on paper needs a 2C. I put actual money on this team making real noise next spring, the puck line loves a team nobody rates, and that's exactly what we are right now. 😏 Wait for the fanboys of "five more years of rebuilding" to pile in and tell me I'm delusional... laughable really.
Chanting in April means the building's loud, Enforcer. It doesn't mean the roster is close. I've watched that crowd serenade .500 teams too, Rogers Arena used to do the same thing, and nobody confused noise with a contender.
Define "window" before you hang it on the wall. Which team in the East are we actually built to beat in a seven-game series right now? Show me the structure, not the vibes. And the "trade the picks" crowd wants to burn a first-rounder for a proven centre while we've got the cap space to just... acquire one properly - C$8.5M is a real tool, but only if Hughes uses it on someone who moves the needle, not a sentimental add. But if the kids really are ahead of schedule, keeping the picks plus that C$8.5M in cap space is exactly how you open the window properly: Hughes can add a proven centre at the deadline without gutting the pipeline. Chanting alone isn't a contender, sure, though a crowd like that in April beats a silent one. 📊

@KevReds nostalgia's a nice story, but "nobody rated them until they weren't kids anymore". Define that, because survivorship bias eats half of those memories. For every Forum kid who popped, a dozen faded quietly and nobody posts about them. I'll believe the window when the age curve actually lines up with results, same as Gary's saying.

But honest answer on "ahead of schedule": the real evidence is age curve, not one loud April. When your core kids are still on cheap entry-level deals while other clubs in the division are paying C$8.5M for third-line pace, that's the schedule being ahead, regardless of what the standings said in March.
Small sample though, and I won't pretend the April noise settles anything. KevReds' Forum story cuts both ways, Calgary had loud crowds on middling teams too. My working read: keep the picks, use the cap space as leverage at the deadline when a seller gets desperate, and revisit this thread in December.
