Word is there's talk out of wherever that a certain grumpy right-shot D might shake loose if his team keeps salary-dumping, and I'd drive to the airport myself. Not naming names til I hear it from someone less dodgy than my cousin's buddy who "knows a guy", but the shape of it fits us perfectly, shot-blocking bruiser, plays mean, kills penalties.
Honestly with Pionk probably walking and the blue line looking thinner than a Timmies roll-up rim, I'd toss C$6.5M a year at that profile without blinking. The rumour is empty calories until somebody names the team, and I'd gently push back on StandsGuyFaithful's excitement: grumpy right-shot top-four guys who block shots don't usually shake loose in a salary dump unless they're on the wrong side of 30 or carrying a term they want out of. That's the nuance here, the very situations that make a defender available are usually the ones that make him a declining asset.
If Pionk walks, the internal math gets ugly fast. We'd be asking whoever stays to absorb 20+ minutes a night, and you can't replace that profile with a C$6.5M free-agent wish and a prayer; small sample warning, but our possession numbers cratered whenever the second pair was forced into first-pair duty last season. My realistic target is younger, cheaper, and acquireable via trade rather than July 1st, pay the prospect price instead of the cap price, because term on a 32-year-old bruiser ages like milk on the prairies.
