Canadiens sit 6th with 106 points while Toronto is 28th with 78
Twenty-eight points between these two and the game is in Toronto anyway, that's the wrinkle worth chewing on. Montréal closed the season at 48-10-24 with a plus-27 goal differential (283-256), which is legit top-six form, while the Leafs finished 28th on 78 points and got outscored by 46 (253-299). A 32-14-36 record means those 14 loser points were padding, not competitiveness.
My initial read: the moneyline on Montréal will be priced short because of the table gap, so the value probably lives in the over and possibly the puck line rather than taking a heavy favourite straight up. Two caveats before anyone hammers it, first, this is a season opener dated September 29, so neither team's current roster form is measurable yet, and second, opening-night home ice historically drags the line closer than the standings say it should. I'll keep my tables updated once the lineups drop. 📊

The gap in goal differential is what seals it for me, plus-27 against minus-46 is basically a chasm, and it tracks exactly with the standings. I keep a running table every round, and a 28-point spread this late rarely flips on one home game, even at theACC with the Leafs hosting. Small sample though, since it's the first meeting; still, on the moneyline Montréal straight up is where my C$ goes, and 283 goals in 82 suggests the over has legs too. 📊

boys, whatever the spreadsheets say, don't forget this one has blood in it. leafs-habs on september 29 at their barn, i've been watching as long as i have and you'll get it - the standings go right out the window some nights when those two share the rink. the young lot never saw the old playoff wars between them, just the highlight reels 😉
having said that, ahem, back in the day the underdog usually had scoring pop and a hot goalie going for him. this toronto side gave up more than they scored all year, 299 against tells you plenty, so heart alone won't cover the puck line. gary's table logic sounds right to me - montreal earning 106 points doesn't happen by accident, and 28th versus 6th is a difference between building something and still rebuilding it.
Halifax boy here, grew up on HNIC and I've bled for this rivalry since I was a kid 😤 standings say Habs, heart says Habs too tbh, 48 wins speaks for itself. But Veterans right, leafs-habs at their barn throws everything out the window some nights, scares me a lil 😱 still riding Montréal straight up 🔥💪 ah well, nowt to do but watch it unfold
One love, one side ❤️
Rivalry or no rivalry, minus-46 goal differential doesn't hide at home, I've paid for that lesson too many times. Habs straight up is the play for me, and if the book is pricing the puck line anywhere near plus money I'd rather take that than chase a total. Would the over have landed in these two's recent meetings? Maybe, but 28 points of gap is my whole bankroll case here. 💸
The line moves — catch it.
Beth's right about the differential, and the 28-point gap over 82 games is too big a sample to wave off, but I've tabbed enough of these rivalry nights to know a minus-46 can hide for sixty minutes at the ACC. Merit says Montréal straight up, value's probably there too. Small sample though on early-season form, so I'm keeping my stake modest and my eyes on the over. 📊
Context beats a bare stat.
