i was 17 when messier buried that one in overtime at the coliseum, and honest to god i can still hear the noise. we'd already lost the first two games to boston and half the fellas in my section were grumbling about another heartbreak, and then game 5 goes long and old number 11 just decides enough is enough. the building literally shook. my dad had season seats back then and he said it was louder than anything he'd heard since '84.
the young lot never saw that barn breathe like that, and that's their loss 😄 thirty-five years on and no canadian team has lifted the cup since '93 - makes you appreciate what we had even more. drop your memories, legends, i'll grab a coffee and read every one of them tonight.

I always caution my own kids about sample size when they ask which team was better, but honestly, that '90 group had something this current roster is still searching for - that refusal to lose when the games got long. McDavid and Drai are generational, no argument, yet Messier's bunch willed their way through a bad start against Boston in a way the modern team hasn't quite matched yet.
