Five games in 13 days worries me more than Utah does, honestly - 3-game Cali swing right before we get them back home. That said I'm taking Oil ML plus looking hard at the puck line (+/- around -140ish wherever you look); offence was good last year, the leaky D might bite us though. Bankroll discipline is everything in October, small unit then re-assess after Oct 8 😎💰
Bankroll discipline wins.

Harry, I'd split your worry differently: the fatigue argument cuts both ways, since Utah plays no such gauntlet but the Oilers' 282 goals against a 269 against is basically a coin-flip goal differential dressed up as 14th place. Context matters, a +13 diff says the leaky defence and the decent offence cancel out, so I lean over rather than ML for Oct 16. My sheet has home openers after a Cali swing (Anaheim/San Jose/LA) trending toward messy games, and the D core hasn't shown me anything yet to plug that. 📊

Fatigue cuts both ways but Utah's fresh legs at Rogers Place scare me more, honestly. I'd rather fade the ML here and take Utah plus money on the road, a 269-against defence giving a rested team its first look all season, that's how my C$ slips died last year. Harry's puck line lean only lands if the Oil go up early, and opening night vs a buzzsaw schedule? I'm not paying juice for that. 🔥
Value over a big price 💸

Ben, how'd that Utah plus-money slip treat you last spring? 😂 Fade the home opener all you like mate, I'll take the Oil and laugh all the way to the payout 🤡💸
Show me your ROI first 😏

Ben's got 269-against fear but Utah ain't exactly the '85 Oilers either 😂 rested legs or not, Rogers Place opener is a full barn, that counts for something 🔥 backing them all day 💪
Heart with the team, head on pause.

Nobody's mentioned the schedule asymmetry in the right place yet, so here's my angle: the tired-legs argument for Oct 16 only works if Utah's defence holds up through a full season, and we have zero sample on that. depend how you count it. Rest advantage is real, but it decays fast. By game five of Edmonton's stretch (Seattle home, then Anaheim, San Jose, LA on the road), the Oil will have taped five games of data; Utah walks in cold with one. That cuts both ways, sure, but historically openers against a team mid-routine favour the mid-routine side more than the fresh one. There's a nuance here though: small sample, single game, variance eats models alive. My play is modest, I'd take Edmonton ML only if the price stays under -150, otherwise pass entirely and put a small prop on an Oilers over-type goal market, since 282-for last season suggests scoring isn't the question.

Ben buddy what slip died last year, you gonna cry about Utah before they've even played a game here?? 😂 Rest advantage decays fast, Jack said it himself, and honestly that's the whole point. Nobody knows what Utah's defence looks like through 60 minutes at a rocking Rogers Place, so fading the home opener off vibes is wild to me. Millie's got it right tbh, I was at the barn for a home opener a couple seasons back, place was LOUD from puck drop, you just know the boys feed off that 🔥 Five games in 13 days is a grind but three of em are against teams we should handle. Oil ML for me, maybe sprinkle the puck line if the price is decent. BACKING THEM ALL DAY 💪🐧

The goal differential angle keeps getting skipped here, 282-269 over 82 games is a plus-13 team wearing a contender's jersey, and that shapes my Oct 16 read more than the Cali swing does. I'd rather take the over or a lean ML than pay puck line juice against a Utah side we've got essentially no defensive sample on yet; small sample though, one game decides nothing. Capping my stake accordingly, C$25 feels right for an opener this murky.
Context beats a bare stat.

Plus-13 still made playoffs easily tho Zoe, decent luck goes a long way in game 1 🙌 trusting Skinner to show up, putting a small C$20 on the ML tbh 🔥

StandsGuyFaithful, a C$20 on the ML is the right size, but check what you're actually paying for. Think of it like buying insurance on a house with a good roof and old wiring - Edmonton's offence (282 goals) is the roof, the 269 against is the wiring, and Skinner is the guy holding the flashlight. Over 82 games that plus-13 tells you they win close more often than they lose them, which is exactly the profile you want in a single home game against a team with no established defensive sample. Zoe's right that the differential matters more than the road trip narrative. Where I'd dig a bit deeper: the Oct 16 spot is actually one of the softer landing spots in that stretch. Back home after California, but Utah has travel of their own and we can't verify their structure holds. I'd rather take Edmonton ML modestly than chase the puck line, because leaky defence means a one-goal cover is asking for sweat you don't need.

Gary that wiring line is cute but c'mon man, Skinner held the flashlight fine plenty of nights last year and everyone blames him when the defence in front leaks 😤 Zoe says plus-13 like it's a smoking gun - 93 points and a playoff spot, that's the table talking, not some lucky bounce fairy I'm with StandsGuy tbh, small stakes only for game one, my C$20's already on the ML 🔥 you just know the crowd at Rogers Place drags them through it, home opener energy is real. Cali swing first? nah, that's three winnable games, Anaheim and San Jose ain't exactly murder rows.Backing them all day, let's go Oil 💪

Reading the schedule on my own spreadsheet here 📊, the thing nobody's quantified yet is rest days. Oct 3 at home, then three days before Anaheim, two before San Jose, four before LA, and only two before Utah comes in on the 16th. So by the time the Mammoth land in Edmonton, the Oil will have played four games in eleven days with two cross-country flights folded in. That's a fatigue profile, and fatigue shows up in the goal against column first, which is exactly where last season's 269 tells you this roster has the least margin. So I'm leaning the other way from StandsGuy and GaryArmy: the plus-13 isn't a smoking gun on its own, sure, small sample in game one anyway, but layered on a tired defence it's why I'd rather take Utah on the ML or the plus side of the puck line than pay juice on Edmonton at home. If Skinner gets the start on full rest while the Oil are on their fourth game in eleven nights, that's the edge.

Only two rest days before Utah is the whole wager, agreed. Locked Oilers ML and a slice of the puck line, C$50 total, see you after the match 💸
Up one week, down the next. Classic.
