Five games in eleven days to open the season
FINALLY man, hockey's almost back at Rogers Place ππ₯ Oct 3rd vs Seattle, count me IN. Five games in eleven days right out the gate is gonna be a war but I'm backing them all day, you just know this team's got more fight than that 269-goals-against mess showed last year πͺπ€
You don't abandon your own.
Absolutely backing the good version, 41 wins doesn't happen by accident π₯ Seattle better buckle their chinstraps Oct 3rd, Rogers Place gonna be LOUD π
One love, one side β€οΈ
Line for the opener isn't out yet, but you know Edmonton at home vs Seattle will probably sit around -150 to -170 on the moneyline, and that's a pass for me. I put C$100 or so on the puck line instead - Oilers -1.5 usually pays plus money in these spots, and if the good version shows up like you two are saying, that's the play that actually moves the bankroll.
First thing I'm checking before touching anything is who's in net Oct 3rd. Starting goalie decides whether I even look at the total, forget the side. That 269 against scares me more than the 282 for excites me, honestly. If Seattle's guy is confirmed and Edmonton's is a question mark, I'm fading and waiting for the Anaheim game instead. Five games in eleven days. I'd rather take two selective swings at C$50 each than spray five bets and bleed out by mid-October ππΈ
Up one week, down the next. Classic.
Two versions of this team show up and honestly last season felt like flipping a coin 82 times π€£ this thread's already got a life of its own and the puck hasn't even dropped yet. I'll be the guy stress-eating wings at Rogers Place on Oct 3rd trying to figure out which squad laced up. Hold my pint, October's gonna be a ride π
Hold my pint.
Betting against the opener? bold π I'll trust the goalie to bail us out during this stretch, we've survived worse stretches π₯πͺ
Trust the goalie? That's the same net that leaked 269 goals last year, no? π
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but I'd want proof before betting C$100 on them. Still learning this stuff π
Learn something new every day.
Dave buddy, the goalie bailed us out MORE than enough last year, that's the part everyone forgets when they see 269 against π€ How many nights did we get outshot and steal two points anyway? Whole lotta those losses were the boys partying in their own end, that's on the D core and backchecking, not on whoever's standing in the blue paint.
Five games in eleven days tho, that's where I get nervous ngl. Kraken at home Oct 3rd, then THREE straight on the road, Anaheim, San Jose, LA β all before Utah comes to Rogers Place on the 16th. That Anaheim game is a trap for me, everyone circles San Jose and forgets the Ducks love playing spoiler π If we come out of that road trip 2-1 I'm calling it a win, plain and simple. Am I scared of the leaky version showing up? Nah. I've watched this team through thick and thin, they show up when the building's loud π₯πͺ
On the terraces since I was a kid.
Don't laugh guys, but if the goalie was stealing points all year why'd we finish 14th? π€ Sounds more like excuses than proof, no? Thanks for explaining either way, Veteran π
Paul, 14th place with 93 points is the thing - awful lot of teams would take that π
We bled goals AND still hit 41 wins, imagine if the defence shows up even halfway. Five in eleven days, ya I'm nervous, but the opener at Rogers? we show up, always do π₯πͺ
But 41 wins AND 269 goals against can both be true, no? Feels like the defence never actually showed up, we just survived π
How does that fix itself by October?
Nick, that stretch fixes itself the same way it broke - schedule. Five in eleven days with four on the road and nobody's legs are gonna be pretty, tbh π
but the opener vs Seattle at Rogers? That barn will be LOUD π₯ and last year proved the goalie can steal a month of points if needed. through thick and thin, I'm riding with we ππͺ
On the terraces since I was a kid.
Still learning this stuff, so go easy on me π
but if the goalie "stole points" last year, isn't that just another way of saying the defence left him hung out to dry? π€
New here, soaking it up.
Supporter, every goalie gets hung out to dry sometimes, that's hockey π
but ours bailed us out more than most. 41 wins don't happen by luck. We're fine πͺπ₯
You don't abandon your own.
Sam's right that 41 wins don't come from luck, but I've sat through enough Octobers in this league to know the first month tells you less than people think π Back when I had seats in the old barns, teams used to open the season looking like a dumpster fire and waltz into the playoffs by spring. The reverse happens too.
That defence question Nick asked, honest answer is nobody knows yet. Last year's crew leaked goals all winter and still cashed 93 points, so which version shows up Oct 3rd? The one that beats Seattle in a track meet or the one that gets outworked by Anaheim two nights later? Watch as long as I have and you'll get it, expectations are the first thing the schedule eats. I'll take the opener loud and the road trip rough, and let's see who's standing by mid-October.
Seen it all, lads.
