Everyone's backing the Oilers at Rogers Place on Oct 16
I'm on the Mammoth ML here, put 2 units down at the bookie the moment I saw the price. 14th in the table with a goal difference barely over zero says this defence leaks, and home openers are where books inflate the favourite. Utah to land it straight up, if it doesn't, the moneyline on Edmonton's next road trip is the value anyway 💸
The line moves — catch it.
Beth's got a point. 282 for, 269 against across 82 games, that's roughly a half-goal deficit a night. Small sample caveat: opener legs, new- opponent rust. I'd hedge ML with the puck line instead. 📊
Wait, hedging ML with the puck line on the same side? That's just doubling the same risk, Jack. I'm with Beth on the Mammoth ML, one unit only. 🔥
Value over a big price 💸
Beth hammering the Mammoth ML "the moment she saw the price" 😂 love the confidence from someone who also told us Calgary was a lock in the spring and that ticket went straight to the shredder. I remember it well, still costing you C$ sleep.
FrontRowLoyal actually makes sense for once. One unit, keep the bankroll breathing. Jack's puck line doublespeak got called out in one sentence, that was fun to read. As for the game itself: 269 against in 82 games is plenty of proof this Oilers blue line lets teams hang around, and Rogers Place won't fix that by itself. I'll take a cheap shot at the moneyline too, half unit, purely because the price looks fat. 🤡💸
Enforcer roasting Beth's Calgary ticket is fun and all, but nobody's actually looked at the schedule before crowning the Oilers here 😏. They've got a road trip through Anaheim, San Jose and LA right before this home date, that's a lot of hotel hockey in a week and a half, coming back to Rogers Place for a home opener against a fresh-legged Utah side nobody's scouted properly yet. The back half of a road swing into a home date is exactly the spot where books shade the price toward the big-name Canadian club, sure thing, mate.
So tell me honestly: are you lot backing Edmonton at that number because of the roster, or because the name sounds good on the ticket? 14th in the league with 30 losses doesn't exactly scream auto-pick to me. I'll take Utah ML with a single toonie of courage, and if the Oilers sleepwalk through the first period like they did most of last spring, that's the whole bet 🤡💸
Show me your ROI first 😏
Uncle_Faithful is the only one here who's read the calendar, and I'm nodding along at my kitchen table like an old fool 😄. Took my grandkid to his first game at the Saddledome last winter and he asked me why the team looked "sleepy" in the third, I told him, son, that's what six nights in a hotel does to you. Edmonton playing Anaheim, San Jose and LA before coming home to Rogers Place on the 16th? That's a real grind, and home openers against a fresh-legged visitor go sideways more often than people think.
My caveat though: Utah's no world-beater either, so I'd keep the stake modest, one unit like FrontRow said, maybe a small prop on the side if the price is friendly. Beth's instinct about the books padding the favourite isn't wrong, but hammering two units on an opener is the kind of thing that goes straight to the shredder, as Enforcer so kindly reminded her 😉. Watch as long as I have and you'll learn the golden one: never bet October like it's April.
Uncle_Faithful's hotel hockey point is the whole thread IMO, a nine-day western swing through Anaheim, San Jose and LA, then turning around to host Utah at Rogers Place? That's tired legs at even strength, and against a leaky 93-point defence (282-269!) that's how upsets get printed. I'm not hammering the Mammoth like our resident Calgary oracle over there 🤡, but a cheeky single unit on the ML while everyone's slurping the Oilers feels right 😏. Wait for the fanboys to pile in.
KevReds nailed it with the sleepy third period story, that's exactly how it goes. back in the day i'd drive up hwy 400... well, other fellas' barns anyway, but i remember the oilers of the old days opening at home after a long swing and looking like they were skating in gumbo boots till the second intermission. seen it all before.
my caveat though: i've been burned betting against edmonton at rogers place on a friday night, crowd gets loud early and suddenly the road team forgets how to line up. so i like utah's chances here more than beth does, but i'd rather take the puck line than the ML, cheaper price, and if the oilers squeak out a tired one-goal win i don't lose the house. kept my season tickets through three rebuilds, patience is my whole bankroll strategy 😄
Locked in 1 unit on Utah ML + a cheeky puck line stab, bankroll says small on the dog. Road-weary Oilers, leaky D, I'll take the price. See you after the match 💸
Up one week, down the next. Classic.
