Laughable that anyone still thinks Pettersson is untouchable when Hughes is out there playing 28 a night like a man possessed while the forwards vanish after the 2nd intermission 😏 I've seen this movie, I'd trade whoever gets us a proper defence-first core, and I'd sleep fine. Wait for the fanboys to pile in defending their favourites, but the puck don't lie 🤡💸
Trade Pettersson and then what, who centres the top six, Demko's rebound passes? Hughes eating 28 a night is a symptom of thin forward depth, so the fix is adding around him, not gutting the one line that can score. Show me one contender that rebuilt defence-first by trading its best forward and got better. Not convinced.

been through enough of these rebuilds to know the smell, folks. back in my day we shipped off fan favourites at the drop of a hat and the barn still filled up on saturdays, the kids today panic at the idea of moving Pettersson like it's the end of the world. i watched this club mortgage the future for short-term band-aids more than once, and it bought us nothing but long winters and expensive popcorn 😄
so when i see Hughes chewing up 28 minutes while the forwards go quiet after the second intermission, my gut says the blueline's been the spine for a while now. that said, Fanatic_Life isn't wrong that you need somebody down the middle to score, trading Petey just to stock defenders solves one hole by digging another. my two cents: build from the back, yes, but trade from your surplus up front, not your only centremen. patience, kids. i've seen it all before, and the clubs that did it right hurt for a couple years, then feasted.

I'd add one caveat: even if Tocchet spreads the minutes, Hughes has been carrying a blueline with no true second-pair anchor behind him, so the rebuild-around-defence argument still stands to me. Small sample on the third-period splits this season, mind you, but I've watched enough games from my couch near FirstOntario Centre to know what tired forwards look like, and ours stop skating around the 50-minute mark.

Goalscorers come and go but a blueline that can chew 20 hard minutes builds more 40-goal men than any forward lottery ticket does. petey's lovely when the ice is tilted our way, but hughes is out there dying for his supper every third period while the kids watch from the press box. trade from your surplus up front, keep the kids, get hughes a partner, and the goals will follow 😉
Kev's got a point, though I'd add a condition: the defenceman we bring back actually has to eat tough minutes, because a "second-pair anchor" who can't skate against top-six competition just turns Hughes into a 30-minute guy instead of a 28-minute guy.
