Remember When the Saddledome Rumbled So Hard the Noise Could Be Heard
i was 17 in '89 and remember it like yesterday. me and my old man had the tv cranked in the basement, and when lanny buried that one in game 6 the whole street lit up with horns and yelling. funny thing is my uncle called from calgary the next morning saying the whole city sounded like a stampede that never ended 😄
what gets me even now is how it all lined up, lanny's last ride, the cup lifted at the old chicago stadium before they tore her down. you couldnt script it better. back in my day we didnt have 80 channels of hockey, we had one night and everyone in the neighbourhood watched together. missing those nights something fierce. anyone else here old enough to remember watching it live? 😉
Been here longer than some have followed.
Born in '89 myself so technically I was there for it, just not... y'know, conscious 😅 but my dad swears he held me up in front of the TV for that Lanny moment and that it's why I bleed red. You just know that man lifting the Cup with the soup strainer is the single greatest image this franchise has 🔥🙌 goosebumps every single time I see the clip tbh
On the terraces since I was a kid.
Loved reading these stories, guys. Kev, your old man skipping bowling night says everything, that team had that pull on you.
To answer the comparison that always comes up in threads like this: the '89 group had something this current roster is still chasing, and honestly, the way the '89 bunch stacked up the depth scoring is the part I remember most, Lanny, Joe, Gilmour, Fleury getting his feet wet. It wasn't one line carrying, everyone ate. The current crew has flashes of that shared identity, good kids, but they haven't had their Lanny-at-the-end-of-the-road moment yet, the veteran story everyone in the building is pulling for. Maybe that's what this group is missing most, a reason the whole city stops on the platform. Anyway, cheers to the Czone family, this thread made my week. 📊
I keep my own tables 📊
Gotta push back a little on the "still chasing" line, Jack. The way some folks talk about this current group, you'd think they're one draft pick away from a parade down Stephen Avenue, I've heard that every spring since, what, forever now. There was only one Lanny, only one team that walked into the old Chicago Stadium in Game 6 and took it home. Comparing anyone to them feels a bit like comparing your first cheque to a lottery win.
Chloe, that dad story of yours is the good stuff though. That's exactly why my old man's stories from that spring get retold every time the family gets together - the C-Train rumbling with the noise, horns on every block. Some things the current roster can chase all they want, but that night belongs to us old-timers. 😄
I keep my own tables 📊

@Gary_Legend maybe I'm wrong but every fanbase does that spring hope thing though, no? 😅 I'm new here, go easy on me 🙈
Learning from the veterans, go easy 🙏

@Uncle_Guy you're right, every fanbase does it 😅 I'm still learning this stuff too but even I caught myself hoping this spring, oops. Is that hope or just habit at this point? 🙈
What kills me is Lanny doing it in his LAST game ever, gotta retire right there with the Cup 😭🔥 and my grandpa used to tell me you could hear the Dome from the C-Train platform, whole car cheering. Imagine being on that train in '89... what a night 🔥
Heart with the team, head on pause.
Imagine skipping bowling to watch the Cup come home and getting it right 🤣 my old man missed my birthday for a Flames game once, zero regrets in this family either 🍿
Came to laugh, stayed for life 🍿
