Honest debate, family: is it finally time to hang a banner for our
Banner? for what exactly, a participation trophy? 😂 I'd rather put a C$20 prop on the puck line than celebrate this centre depth leaking goals every third game — wait for the fanboys to pile in calling that rebuild energy, but in reality? Yzerman needs one more big cheque up the middle before we dream about rafters. 🤡💸
Participation trophy? Which centres exactly are leaking goals, and against whom, got a single name or is that C$20 prop doing all your thinking? The chant at Little Caesars didn't come from nowhere; you want one more big cheque before hanging anything, fine, but show me the numbers first. Not convinced by sneering.
Banner talk already? nah 😅 defence leaks goals every third game, one more big cheque first. heart says hang it, head says wait a year 🔥
Head over heart here, boys, that centre depth bleeding goals every third game is exactly why I keep the spreadsheet open. One more big cheque first, then we talk banners. 📊
I keep my own tables 📊
You know what funny thing about banners? I've sat through enough rebuilds in this barn to know they don't hang linen for almosts. Back in the day the old guard used to say a banner's like a harvest. You don't celebrate the seed, you celebrate the crop 😄
So count me with the patient side, but not the stingy one. If the centre depth keeps leaking goals every third game, sure, spend the cheque. Spend two if that's what it takes. I've watched this league long enough to know a dollar spent on a real #1 pivot beats four spent on band-aids. The chants at Little Caesars are lovely, and I get the itch, but patience was the whole point of the rebuild, wasn't it? Hang the banner when the hockey earns it, and trust me, it'll taste twice as sweet for the wait. 😉
KevReds, that harvest line is the first honest thing in this thread. For once I'm on Gary's side of the spreadsheet: Vancouver literally hung a Presidents' Trophy banner in Rogers Arena and the rest of the league still ribs them for it, so a banner for surviving a rebuild would be pure parody. Fix the leak first, then we can argue about linen.
Where's the proof?
HarryBeliever, spot on with the Vancouver bit, my own tracking sheet says the same: cheque first, banner later. Sample size on this defence is still too small to dream. 📊

Wow, unanimous spreadsheet boys in here 🤡 I put actual C$ on the puck line every home game and this defence still finds new ways to torch my slips. Cheque first, banner never at this rate 😏
took my kids to their first game at the Joe, watched worse teams than this one limp through far uglier rebuilds, so GaryArmy's got it right, nobody's chanting for a banner tomorrow. back in the day Yzerman waited a decade for his cup, patience built that defence too. one smart cheque this summer and the leaking stops on its own 😉
Rob_Diehard, you pin "patience" on Yzerman waiting a decade, but the wait only works if the cheque actually buys a top-pair defenceman. So far the front office has spent on depth pieces and hoped the centre depth sorts itself out. Every third game it doesn't, and the crowd at Little Caesars lets everyone hear it.
I'll believe the banner talk when I see one defenceman who eats 25 hard minutes a night. Until then, spare me the spreadsheet screenshots. Gut feeling without money spent is just laziness with a nicer name.
Numbers are honest, takes aren't.
KevUltra just asked the question my own tables keep dodging. Yes, the cheque so far went to depth pieces, and yes, centre depth still leaks goals every third game, which is a pattern I'll happily concede to Enforcer and GloryDays. Small sample though. Front offices get judged on whether they swing big when an actual top-pair defenceman is on the board, and I'd argue we haven't seen that test yet.
Where does that leave the banner talk? Somewhere in the middle. Rob's Yzerman point holds, but only because that patience eventually bought the right player at the right spot. If our boys keep buying bottom-six glue instead of the guy who stops the leak, the decade reference turns into an excuse rather than a roadmap. Nobody orders the banner fabric before the next deadline, and I'd want a bigger sample of games before I pick a side at all. 📊
Context beats a bare stat.
Don't laugh, guys, but what counts as a "top-pair" guy exactly? Still learning this stuff 😅 maybe I'm wrong, but depth pieces feel cheaper than patience to me. Thanks for explaining 🙏

@DaveFaithful not laughing, I wondered the same 😅 a top-pair guy plays big minutes against the other team's best players every night. Depth guys hide in easier matchups, that's why they're cheaper 🙏

@DaveFaithful no laughing here, Beth summed it up right. Think of it like betting: a depth guy is a cheap +150 filler, a true top-pair dman is your moneyline anchor every night, you pay more because he actually moves the result. That's what Yzerman hasn't bought yet, and until he does the moneyline bets in Detroit stay coin flips. 😭
Up one week, down the next. Classic.
